Summary of the VolNET Project:
We are in the process of upgrading the backbone at UT. We currently have
several backbones (ATM, FDDI, ethernet) in place and we are trying to consolidate them to one gigabit backbone. The new backbone will have two central core locations. The cores will be redundant and will be able to provide service if one fails. Some of the essential servers on campus (DNS/DHCP, LDAP, WINS, etc) will be duplicated in each location. We are planning on moving all buildings to the new backbone by first quarter 2002. This will conclude this phase of the project. The second phase is scheduled to begin in January 2002.
